Massive Multi-authored Online Book Takes Off

with one comment

Following on the heals of my blog entry on facilitating book writing from voluntary online expert contributions we see the emergence of the ‘A Million Penguins‘ book project. This is joint project between Penguin Books and De Montfort university in the UK. It is naturally set up on the free MediaWiki platform that is used to deliver Wikipedia.

According to the Courier Mail article within a day of going live the first 12 chapters had been written! The response was so great that the project administrators had to move the wiki pages to new and more powerful servers, and at the time of writing not all content was visible for editing.

The project will fairly soon determine whether massively multi-authored online books have merit. Nevertheless the concept is appealing.

Update: see Want to write a book? Just join the wiki queue
