Bond’s Electronic Image
6 March 2006
I was reading Leigh Blackall’s thought-provoking blog entry to help new staff induction by directing them to Wikipedia and Flickr, the two obvious places to find definitive articles and pictures about real-world objects like teaching institutions. Leigh found no information about his new home, Otago Poly, on either site so he created his own from the knowledge he gathered from a little research and by taking a structured collection of photos.
This led me to look at Bond’s entries on Wikipedia and Flickr. Information is there all right but is probably not at the polished standard our university’s management would like to see. Despite recent criticism Wikipedia now houses over 1 million articles, most of good quality, and Flickr is the most popular image repository.
Should our public relations staff be ensuring our information on these two very important sources is accurate and comprehensive?
