XPS – the XML version of PDF

Although it won’t arrive fully implemented until Vista’s release the momentum behind XPS (XML Paper Specification) from Microsoft is building. Eventually free viewers like Acrobat Reader for PDF will be available on all platforms for XPS.

To quote for the XPS web site ‘A document in XPS Document format (XPS Document) is a paginated representation of electronic paper described in an XML-based format. The XPS Document format is an open, cross-platform document format that allows customers to effortlessly create, share, print, and archive paginated documents.’

Office 2007 will install an XPS printer which will allow all applications to print to XPS format. Time will tell if this format ever overtakes PDF, but I suspect XPS will be as widely used as the Flash format in a short time.
