Atlas becomes the Microsoft AJAX Library

On the 5th anniversary of 9/11 we saw the announcement of the naming of the impressive Atlas technology from Microsoft. scottgu (Scott Guthrie, General Manager of ASP.NET and related technologies) tells us the product name will be the Microsoft AJAX Library for the browser-independent Javascript sources. The server-side controls that integrate so beautifully with ASP.NET receive the less distinguished name of the ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions, almost certainly over time to be simply rolled into ASP.NET.

The other great news is that we will see the fully supported version 1.0 of the Microsoft AJAX Library released by year’s end to work with Visual Studio 2005. It was rumoured we wouldn’t see the library before .NET 3.0 and the Orcas Visual Studio not due for at least another year.

With my research semester due in 071 I can’t wait to start converting some of my Dot* AJAX tools to the new AJAX library so that they will work across all modern browsers. Woopee!
