Programming Language Trends

Tim O’Reilly uses stats for computing book sales to follow trends in the use of programming languages. His latest report shows (click image to enlarge):

It seems that Java books are still the top-sellers but are declining by 14% year-on-year whereas C# books are in second place and sales are effectivley static. Bright green represent the high-flying languages and any shade of green shows increasing popularity.

A glance at the sales figures over several years is also illuminating:

The big declines in Java and Visual Basic are obvious. Note the rise of JavaScript and Ruby.
